Before the age of mp3s, podcasts and streaming radio, we all used to make mix CDs.

A good mix was a sign of the times. The soundtrack to a personal experience. How many times have you found a blank CD in your room or your car, popped it in and instantly relived some great memories? Uploading mix CDs will be a new thing I’ll be trying on the site. While I’ll still be uploading mix sets and live DJ sets, I want to bring back an old past-time. This mix is meant to be downloaded, burned on a CD and enjoyed.

While I’m most known for DJing electro and dance music, my first love in music was rock. I wanted to put together a good compilation of some of my favorite tracks. All of these are great markers for good experiences I’ve had over the years. From classics, new stuff and maybe even some tracks you’ve never heard before, I want this CD to be downloaded, enjoyed and listened to along side activities that are destined to be good memories.

“E” was the first DJ set I ever made as a DJ. I worked on it for the first 3 months of 2008 and I still listen to it. It was the first thing I did that really made me feel like an accomplished DJ. 2 years later, the mix still holds up and I’m happy to repost it for those who may have missed it.

A few weeks ago, a fellow Filipino on Twitter told me he was heading back to the Motherland and asked me to make him a 90s hip hop mix for the trip. I was happy to do so. Asides from the 80s, the 90s was my favorite decade of hip hop music.

This DJ set is an hour long.

So much happened in that decade, I don’t think I could have contained everything in one set. While mix sets can be as long as they want, I like to keep mine around the one hour mark. Considering that, I thought it would be best to make a few volumes of this DJ set. The one you’re about to download comes in 3 parts.

Part One is called Coast To Coast. If there was one thing that marked the feel of the 90s hip hop scene it was the “East Coast / West Coast” rap rivalry. Instead of using the songs that were the backdrop for this feud, I decided it would be best to put in tracks that exemplified why each coast was great. I put together a few tracks that I thought were some of the best samples of each side’s offers. Purists will argue that it’s not a complete list, but this is only Volume 1. Relax.

Part Two is titled Collabos and Battles. Getting together is what hip hop is all about. Whether it’s to make a great track with guest rappers or to talk trash about one another, some of the best moments of that decade included more than one emcee. This part of the mix features my favorite rap battle of the decade sandwiched between two of my favorite collaborations of the period. I also threw in two tracks that match the intensity of the theme. (Two parts in and no Biggie and Tupac? Again, remember: It’s only Vol. 1!)

Finally, Part Three is Hip Hop and RnB. The decade really embraced the interplay between the two genres and within this portion are some of my favorite get togethers. This portion also features a few singers that are unfortunately no longer with us and I’m happy to pay my respects to them in this mix.

I’m currently working on a set of Daft Punk tribute mixes, my pick for band of the last century. Before I post any of the mixes, I’d like to give everyone some appetizers to get your ear drums ready.

For starters, here’s an edit most people don’t know about. This edit by Soulwax, for the Daft Punk track “Oh Yeah,” proves that they truly know their music. I can’t find a date on when this track was done, but knowing Soulwax, it was probably created well before the craze of super mash ups brought on by people like Girltalk. There are so many samples going on in this song. It’s such a treat to listen to. It makes you just want to sit there and try to name them all!

I’m a huge fan of samples and the art of sampling music. Daft Punk really turned the concept of sampling into a true art form. Their samples are so clean and not instantly recognizable, they are truly geniuses on par with The Avalanches. As I start posting the mixes, I’ll express my love for Daft Punk and the art of sampling that they embody. For now, get busy to this Soulwax edit!

There are points in this recording when the sound may get lower and that’s intentional. This is a live recording of an event, so at certain times I lower the sound and looped parts a little longer than normal to make way for announcements.

Also, for what it’s worth, it’s not the smoothest recording. It’s hard DJing without headphones to cue with and a monitor to make sure all my levels and mixing are on point. But overall, it’s still pretty solid listening! Part Two, which is over an hour long, will be out shortly!
